UNSUNG HEROES OF SOUL #1963

Garnet Mimms produced one of soul music's first big hits, "Cry Baby" (1963). His entry at allmusic.com states, "[His] pleading, gospel-derived intensity made him one of the earliest true soul singers. [And] his legacy remains criminally underappreciated.”

Freddie Scott had a top ten pop hit in 1963 and a #1 Rhythm & Blues hit in 1967. As Bill Dahl wrote for the "The Best of Freddie Scott" CD, “[He was] blessed with sleek pipes that grew grittier as the [1960s] progressed.”

Despite their “one-hit wonder” status, the Tams became huge favorites on the Beach Music scene in the Carolinas and the Northern Soul scene in the UK. They even had a #1 smash in England with a seven-year-old recording!
